Digital Photography

June 27, 2007

Digital photography is easily the fastest growing trend of our time. With a consumer adoption rate faster than CDs, DVDs and even the Internet, digital photography is clearly at the forefront of today’s consumer electronics market. This new interest in digital photography is creating a startling demand for digitally compatible products. Recent statistics show just how fast digital photography is growing:

  • 235 billion digital photographs were taken in 2004.
  • Nearly 50% percent of US households now own a digital camera.
  • By 2008, more than 80% percent of US households will own a digital camera.
  • Digital photography is now a $3 billion business world-wide.

The Problem with Pictures

Without a doubt, digital photography has taken flight, but with it comes a wave of new concerns for consumers. Traditional storage, organization, and sharing methods no longer apply to digital photos. Most people keep their digital photos on their computers or on disks where they are at high risk of being lost or erased by temperamental machinery. What about organizing your wealth of digital images? There is simply nowhere to put digital photos where you can easily view and organize them. Sharing digital photos can also be confusing and frustrating. Most people share their photos via E-mail, but no E-mail attachments can hold all your images. Statistical evidence shows the growing cracks in digital photography:

  • Less than 3% percent of the US population uses a photo sharing website for storage, organization and sharing.
  • More than one trillion traditional photos are fading away and at risk for flood, fire, theft, or other damage.
